My son is 13 he just got a cell phone from his , is he too young?

My son is 13 and in the eighth grade and just recently got a cell phone from his father. Last night I thought he was asleep, but I always check on my kids before I go to bed. It was pretty early around 10:30 but he went to bed @9 so I thought. When I turned on the light to the room I saw that he was texting and had his phone under the pillow. I felt weird. I know he's a boy and talks to girls and what I hear from his sister is that he has a girlfriend. I know he is growing up , but is this to fast. Should I take away his phone on school nights. I know when I was in middle school my parents didn't let me talk on the phone and of course then, there wasn't cell phones. Pagers (lol) I did have boyfriends and hid that from my parents. should I be glad I know. I just don't want him to make the mistakes I did. He's a straight A student and in sports. I don't want him to get distracted by some young girls. Not only that who knows what type of girls he's into. The wild or calm ones. Maybe i'm being paranoid, but I love him. I guess I still see him as my little boy, it makes me sad thinking he's growing up. I keep thinking of him in preschool and wishing he was still there. Should I give him more space...I don't want to lose my baby boy. ( Also what is a good time to make him got to bed) my 12 and 8yr old go to bed at nine is that to early for him?
