Will allowing an amplifier to clip damage either the amp or speakers?

I have a professional XLS range Crown amp running two large Wharfedale speakers which I use for gigs. The speakers are rated to 1000W. I've heard that its not going to hurt the speakers if the clip light briefly flashes. (Like on a beat). Is this correct? What exactly is the clip light warning of?
