I have finish watching both Zhang Yimou's 'Hero' and Akira Kurosawa's 'Kagemusha'...?

and I was struck by the similarity in the philosophy of the King of Qin and Takeda Shingen, both justifying their atrocities by claiming that they are intent on ending violence once in for all via unification. Is this despotic idea common among east Asian culture?
